Frequently Asked Questions

What is this all about?

23 Things aims to show you and your colleagues new Web 2.0 tools and trends that are increasingly popular in libraries and increasingly popular with our clients.

Blogging, wikis, Twitter, YouTube (for video sharing) and Flickr (for photo sharing) are just some of the things the program focuses on. We’ll post a few Things online each week for you to complete at your own pace.

The goals of 23 Things are simple – you should explore, play, and have fun. That’s all. There are no tests, but we do ask you to write about your experiences on your blog. We’ll give you help if you need it – send an email to usyd23@gmail.com

The 23 Things program was created by Helene Blowers at the Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenberg County (PLCMC). We acknowledge her work, and thank her for the permission to adapt it for the University of Sydney Library.

How does this online learning program work?

This self-discovery program encourages you to take control of your own learning and to utilise lifelong learning skills through exploration. There are no classes or workshops offered to support this program. Instead, you are encouraged to work with your colleagues and share discoveries, techniques and "how to" through your blog.

Each week a new post will appear on the Usyd23 blog with 2,3 or 4 “Things” for you to do. Do them at your own pace, and write about your experiences on your blog. That’s it!

How long do I have to complete the program?

The program begins Tuesday 6st October 2010 and winds up Friday 4th December 2010. That’s 9 weeks in total.

How do I track my progress for each of the things I learn about?

Each staff member that chooses to participate in this program will be required to keep a blog to track their progress. You will be anonymous when you are blogging – only the project leaders will know which blog belongs to which participant.

Commenting on other participants’ blogs

Interacting on each other’s blogs is a great way to practise your skills. Keep in mind that blogs are an open forum and our normal standards of professional behaviour as described in our code of conduct apply.

I don't feel comfortable with my co-workers reading my blog, can I participate anonymously?

Yes & No. Since you control all the information that you share on your blog, you can choose to use a screen name to identify yourself to keep yourself anonymous. However, you will need to identify yourself by emailing us at usyd23@gmail.com
